Eavesdropping

(I usually can't stand eavesdropping I don't even like it. I don't even do the 'acceptable' Lagosian gawking .
I'm laying all these down so you can be sure I didn't even try hard to listen, it just sorta 'filtered' into my ears, I just did the honourable thing and surrended.)

(The conversation was in Yoruba, so translation's in brackets)

Mr. A. is the unsuspecting man atmy end of the conversation-

Mr. A:. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Iyawo mi ti bi mo o (we just had a baby)
(Mr. A pauses…)

Mr. A:            … Eh, obirin ni  (oh, well, it's a girl)
(Mr. A says this in a somewhat apologetic tone, then listens for a while, sighs. )

Mr. A: Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â ahh, omo sha lo mo n je (Oh, well, it's a child after all- literarily interprets as -A child's a child.)
(Listens, then continues-)
Mr. A:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â A try next time (We'll try harder next time)

It continues to baffle me when educated men still blame their wife for the sex of their child when MEDICALLY the man is 100% responsible. It shows the strength of TRADITION, CULTURE & superstition.
For all that cares to know, the man determines the SEX of the child, and it is also possible to plan it.
BY CHOICE, NOT BY CHANCE. (there is still the GOD - chance element though)

Seriously, why would he be unhappy? Ok, accusation that 'he no get power to produce man'!! the guy must be a joker. He has plenty to be grateful for, safe gestation, safe delivery, healthy wife and baby.....etc. I had thot maybe the guy just dey produce girls or something and he was wondering what it would be like to have a boy for a change. Make the guy just allow madam rest small, then gbosa! fire anoda one. He just needs to try harder next time........

If i had come to this thread b4 my other post on «funmi's hair palaver» i would not sent the comments there. It not a weird thing and plsssss dont say it is wrong. I personally wanted a girl as my first child (i like women around me), but BABA had a diff plans. i am married to a very beautiful woman that gives me plenty of joy (i am not saying that is her basic assignment either). I just think, funmi should help us out by giving us some other infos like, was that the man's first girl or second third forth....? the man must definitely have a reason for reaction. In my opinion, i would love to have them both male and female, but if i am given only girls or only boys, i should be happy that i have children atall.

Delagasky, honestly I despair of our generation of Naij men when I read comments like yours. I agree with my girl Funmi, if the inference of the conversation is that a girl child is a commissatory prize as oppose to a boy then that's primeval not to mention plain wrong!

why don't you save yourself the agony of imagining? Simply find out from the man, sebi he is just next door? and how come you are so sure the girl is beautiful?

delagasky, what on earth is so apologetic about a female child.
I think it's silly enough to ask about the sex of a child... then to go on and «console» the parents for the birth of a beautiful daughter is just beyound me.
