4 INDUCTIVE LESSONS LEARNT FROM SEASONED ENTREPRENEURS
When it comes to business, it appears to most guys I interact with that I am a totally different person from whom they socialize and laugh with; these guys (especially babes) believe that  I have built an alter ego which is totally different from who I am. I can see the shock and unbelief on their faces when I take business decisions that affect them. They believe Dipo is suffering from schizophrenia – Dipo, the benevolent guy, joke cracker and gregarious fellow and Dipo, the enterprising guy, astute fellow and strict individual. After some time, these individuals get to understand me and know that my actions are for the higher good of the business.Â
Â
Â
I take business as a game; nothing personal. It is a game that has rules, goals and time restrictions. If you follow the rules accompanied with the right skill, you will excel. My work experience played a big part in the way I conduct my business; I am fortunate to have worked both in Access Bank and Globacom because I have learnt from the gurus that run these great institutions. I realize that there is a different skill called «business' different from a chosen vocation. Because you have 15 years experience working as a doctor in a hospital does not automatically mean you can build a successful hospital of your own. This misconception of technical aptitude replacing business acumen is the reason you see so many workforce resigning their appointment to go on their own.Â
Â
Â
The standard perspective suggests that 80% of businesses would fail within 5 years; this statistics should hinder «wanna be» self employed because business is definitely not easy to manage not to talk of start-up; the guys that have bootstrap their way to the top echelon of business have been unusual dreamers, non-conformist and out of this world individuals and they make up 5% of the world's population. Do you think you fall into this category? Every single person that asks my advice on resignation has been told not to take the step. Why you may ask? You do not need confirmation from me to do what you have to do. Remember the word «non-conformist».
I am of the school of thought that business cannot be taught formerly except through induction (learning from those who are taking real time business decision and are succeeding) not through text book and listening to a professors who may not have practically started a business of his own. The whole essence of MBA and other major business degrees is to cultivate the right business language, there are so many skills you will learn from real life entrepreneurs that are not in any text book in the world. Mohammed Yunus defied banking standard and operation modus by establishing the first bank for the poor known as Grameen Bank which became the richest and the most popular bank in Bangladesh. Yunus – a former professor and head of Economics in Chittagong University – admits there was not text book knowledge that could have supported his practicing economics.  Â
Â
Â
Having the above argument in view, one would realize that internship with a successful entrepreneur is priceless so is my experience with Access Bank and Globacom. Most of the lessons here may sound inhuman and may even surprise you but these are principles adhered to by those that have succeeded in this obviously difficult path. My first encounter with these lessons was a struggle of acceptance but time proved these lessons to bring results above contrary opinions. Seat tight, let me take you through my journey with Aigboje Aig Imokhoude (Aig) – M.D. Access Bank and Otunba Chief Mike Adenuga (Chairman) – Owner and founder of Equatorial Trust Bank, Conoil Producing Limited and Globacom Limited. Chairman is also the majority share holder and CEO of Conoil PLC:Â
Â
Â
LESSON 1: Team Work Attitude:  I learnt this lesson on my first day as an employee with Access Bank at an inaugural meeting held in the headquarters conference room. Aig was all suited up in the normal banking attire facing 20 newly employed interns. His story on team work was easily articulated: if you want to take a canoe through a river from point A to point B and you are 4 guys inside the canoe taking turns to row the boat. On reaching the middle of the journey, you realized that one of the member of the crew was very sick and throwing up. Aig looked at us and asked «what do you think the other crew members should do?» The was a huge silence hanging in the air and almost everybody muttered heroic answers but Aig looked at us and said «if you want to be in business, you must carry the sick member and toss him inside the water to drown».Â
Â
Â
This definitely was a shock to everybody but with time I have come to terms with his reasoning after seeing the bible interpretations; if your eyes or hands cause you to sin, pluck them out or cut them off for the hands. Jesus on making us understand the importance of fruitfulness in John 15 literarily said if you are not fruitful, I would cut you off. This is definitely the principle behind effective team work and I have learnt from personal experience the importance of this particular principle; how toxic individuals can kill your fruitfulness and how sentimentally attaching yourself with energy sapping individuals can demean your strategic success.Â
Â
 Â
LESSON 2: The Conscience Flip: In the same meeting while trying to advice the newly employed interns; he came up with another lesson that has given me tremendous success in my career and life. Aig said when you intend to do something and you have a conscience flip (you have a second thought about the intended action), the intended action is most likely wrong. He used a beautiful example of a guy who was part of the management team who has a cousin who supplied paper to the bank and there was a top management meeting about choosing a preferred paper supply. Â
Â
Though the guy would not have violated the company's policy if he did not tell them the supplier was his cousin, it would definitely have been morally wrong for him not to do so and if the management found out his cousin was part of the suppliers they were deciding on without knowing it, they would definitely feel betrayed. This is because in the process of selection, they would have said nasty things about one supplier or the other. This guy in the management team may have had a conscience flip but because he was not going against the bank's policy, he may have felt the need to keep it quiet. The bible puts it this way; «all things are lawful but not all things are expedient».Â
Â
Â
Lesson 3: Blood Relations in Business: 3 days after I was employed in Globacom, I was having training with 5 other newly employed colleagues. The 6 of us have been undergoing bonding with each other and happily having our training when one of us was called to visit HR. She walked back into the training room after the visit to HR, took her bag and walked away from our lives; she was SACKED!Â
Â
You could imagine the presumption, the tension and the curiosity that filled the training room. She called me that night and was surprised to be sacked herself and told me something she had never discussed with me before. She told me she was the first cousin of Mike Adenuga and she never knew until the day of her interview with Mike Adenuga; She had mentioned her name in the interview and Chairman asked if she was the father of this and that. She was shocked that Chairman knew her father and mother and confirmed it. Chairman told everybody in the room that the lady was her first cousin. He then said she should go that he would confirm himself. She was offered the employment and 3 days after, it was taken back from her.Â
Â
We were summoned to the Director's office the next day and were told by the director that Chairman does not employ his blood relative. This was very surprising to me and wondered why someone would do such a thing. The director said it was simply business. I have over the years pondered on this action; why sack someone because he/she is your blood relative? This decision sounded outrageous then but I realized after some time I realized the wisdom behind such decisions on a personal level. The bible puts it this way; Jesus admonishing his disciples by saying you must leave all relatives if you intend on following him so is business; you must leave all relatives out of it if you want a successful business.Â
Â
Â
Â
4. Â LESSON 4: RECEIVABLE MANAGEMENT: While working in the international gateway department of Globacom, I learnt the importance of proper management of receivables. Ordinarily, receivables are very important to our business in the international gateway unit but without proper management of receivable, you could run on a very heavy loss. We broke all standards concerning receivable collection after losing close to 2 million dollars owing to improper management of receivable.Â
Â
Receivables are very important elements in any business and one can rarely do without it but the improper management thereof can cause you a great loss. Almost all businesses go down due to improper management of receivables. I have learnt from Chairman on his stands on receivable; for approval into any receivable, a bank guarantee must be put in place or no business would be done. I implement strong receivable management system in all my business and most people I deal with especially friends are not happy with it. I realized that most people prefer to hold on to receivables for too long causing a total stand still in the flow of the business activities. It's quite unfortunate that some people are not happy with me due to my stands on receivables but I have personally seen businesses go down because of inefficient receivable collection.Â
Â
Those are the 4 crucial lessons I received from these gurus and if you have been in business for a period of time, you will definitely identify the wisdom associated with them. Despite numerous lessons churned out by these gurus, I have isolated these 4 lessons as critical to business maintenance and growth. What do you think about these lessons? Â

it is a pity that in this age and time we still think and reason this way. That a company executive can rely on instincts and fire somebody. What happened to the saying Innocent until proven guilty.
A CEO who sits down to interview people even to the level of a junior staff is actually jobless,CEOs only come on board an interview if you are coming at a very senior level and not for all cadres of staff.
The level of lawlessness in Nigeria has denied and deprived us of our rights that the likes of Adenuga and co can be classified as role models.Organisations who tell women not to get pregnant in 3 years of employment is no company. Where you cant close for the day because your boss is still on seat? Have you heard of Paternity leave? Am sure it must be strange to Nigerians,a man is entitled to 2 weeks leave if his wife gives birth in developed countries.
My prayer is for the Government to liberate us from all these slave drivers and for our people to understand what their fundamental human rights are.
I feel and weep for Nigeria

i'm currently reading a book titled winning by jack welch the former CEO GE general elecrtric.as ceo he and his HR head and top mgt executives were directly involved in hiring so there aint a thing wrong with adenuga doing the same.in firing people,3 things may lead to oit and that includes one, violation of intergrity(stealing, forgery, absenteeism etc).two, layoff due to economic reasons and three nonperformance.in the case of adenuga's relative been sacked i believe that adenuga somehow might know her pedigree or know something that we all dont know that would lead to sacking her.in business its not just about the rules som times you have to trust your insticts and take gutsy decisions.as a leader you cannot afford to be rigid and stick to traditions you have to be adaptable.success is winning

Mr Balogun, if you want to know secrets of success go to libraries or search on the internet.Do not use our successful businessmen in naija who exploit pple and get away with it.Whether someone is appointed or employed, the person has fundamental human rights. Moreover if not for joblessness why would Adenuga be interviewing pple himself.
Many years of suffering in Naija has made us forgo our rights,if Adenuga tries the nonsense he does in Naija by hiring and firing pple at will in a civillised country he would have been bankrupt by now through litigations.ame thing goes for our bank CEOs and their stupid HR policies.
Successful businessmen world over do not follow some of the above rules, only in a backward place like my country will such pple be seen as successful.
I f we want to learn about successful pple, let us read about Bill Gates,Richard Branson and the likes and not pple who have been fronts of any government in power.

dear dipo, hope the i pod will trikle down next time. prince and emeka really deserve it. however prince and ade got it wrong in not distinguishing between employment and appointment. the unfortunate relation of adenuga was an employee but certainly not paddy who is a director because directors are appointed to the position and are more or less stakeholders, pls do not not begrudge the chief and his heir apparent. i wish i had taken heed of some of the points dipo put across so succintly as i made serious errors of judgement in business which should not have been. the old saying certainly still holds true that if you follow the wise, you will become one and same as following a foolish one... thanks dipo. keep em coming.

Just to add my little thoughts.some of the lessons you learnt are spot on and will definitely help in making one a success.
However as someone pointed out Paddy Adenuga in addition to Bella Adenuga shld be fired also. What a lame excuse to get rid of the poor lady. What did Adenuga do to help the so called relative of his?adenuga's sister is on the board of his companies, when people dont want to help they come up with such ideas. Its only in Nigeria you hear that couples cant work in the same organisation. In a civilised world, the lady would sue Adenuga for discrimination and be made to pay through his nose.

@ royal_prince.i like your take on lesson 1.
@all...its one thing to propound theories and another to put them into work.that one is a economics lecturer even professor doesnt mean he can successfully run a company.if the reason for MBA and other degrees is to cultivate the right business language then the right busness acumen comes from within, making decisions and judgements that are far beyond the reach of textbooks and degrees.its one thing to know the factors of production and its another thing to harness these factors to produce results.i believe in team work(its no use hanging on to a team member who cannot perform due to sentiments).two, conscience is of importance because a self-seeking thought or decision could cost a company so much.to be in business, one has to be ruthless either you are the shark or you are the prey.three, blood relations is a touchy issue.anyway, the walton siblings rank among the top richest.its no use doing business with blood relations who under-delivers just because you are related.a blood relation is of no use if he is putting my business at risk.four, efficient receivable system is more like the core of a business without which problems will set in.other core values one might never get from prestigious business schools include flexibility, making on-the-spot decisions and as an entrepreneur three important P's are people, profit and product!in business one has to be on top of the game or you are sidelined.watching donald trump's «the apprentice season 2',sometimes the best guys are fired because they cannot effectively motivate the team and harness the team members unique abilities when a task is given.that is why the winner, kelly(a westpine military school graduate) beat the other members including 2 harvard trained graduate to win.kelly won due to his leadership abilities such as delivering results under pressure and deadlines, taking initiatives, being visionary and making the right decisions if it costs so much.on-the-street experience is dirty, tough, hard and painful but it is worth the while and when combined with the class experience then that makes a whole lot of difference.that richard branson, bill gates and some other wealthy individuals did not go to school or dropped out is not enough reason for somone to say he does not want to go to school.
the greatest latent investmnt remains the mind..guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flows the issues of life..
another mindblowing piece dipo.

Hello Dipo, I must say that your articles always
blow me off my feet.Your articles can be likened to 'A 4 Year Biz
Course' being taught in a year.
Talking about the 4 inductive Lessons you learnt from the seasoned
entrepreneurs you mentioned----It's indeed what makes
thier businesses to become a mega business.
In Rich Dad Poor Dad, Robert Toru Kiyosaki said there are 3 major
areas to look out for, for the successful growth of a business:
The Management of People
(Conscience Flip & Blood relation in biz---I personally dont support it)
The Management of CashFlow (Team work Attitude increases Cash Flow)
The Management of Systems (Receivable Mgt)
....And the best way to learn all this---is by establishing rapport
or engagind in an internship training with successful entrepreneurs
to full grasp the technique of effectively starting a small business
and making it a mega business.
In conclusion---i would like to say that indeed a lot of
established and wanna-be entrepreneurs are One-Skill-Away
from GREAT WEALTH if only we can do whatever it takes using
Godly & Legal means to bring our dreams to fruition.
Thanks Dipo and I would like to personally say to you Thank
you for your excellent service (in taking your time to put this
article together---
All efforts and exertions put forth by man from the fullness
of his heart is WORSHIP.

Hello Dipo,
Nice to hear that you isolated just these four from the numerous lessons learned from these gurus cos the lessons could go on and on.
I found these lines very instructive: «Because you have 15 years experience working as a doctor in a hospital does not automatically mean you can build a successful hospital of your own» and reminds of guy B with a shipping experience in «Sure Investment Part 2».
And what a revelation to know that, «The whole essence of MBA and other major business degrees is to cultivate the right business language»
Lesson1: if the fellow became sick while on board (not before coming on board), then they should find out what is responsible and sort it out even if they have to throw him out.If a once performing member of a team sudenly falls «sick» (i.e stops perfoming), management should find out the cause and sort it out even if they have to lay him off at the end. What is the guarantee that the other 3 in the boat will go the whole length healthy?
On the other, one needs to be very carefull of who joins his boat because «a stich in time saves nine».
«Your friend can either rase or erase you, either make or mar you»- Bishop Oyedepo
Lesson3: I thought Paddy Adenuga is a blood relation to the chairman, i suppose his son. I think there is nothing wrong with having a blood relation who fits the bill and can deliver. But we should know when to cut it off bearing in mind lesson1
Your ability to back up these lessons using Biblical passages is quite challenging and unconventional. I am impressed!
Luv U!
