The best inheritance a man can leave to his offspring is education. Education is very important especially when delving into any line of business whether it is either formal or street education. At this season when Plan B has become a must have for most company executives, it is important to find the niche that suits your talent, personality and character. Throughout this year, I would attempt to open the eyes of my readers to various lines of business and talking to various authorities in their chosen field; last week I spoke with Deolu Akinyemi on Network Marketing, this week I would be talking to Debo Adejana.

Debo is arguably the most influential entrepreneur in the Real Estate Market in Nigeria; he is currently riding a wave of over 7 Estate Developments, of over 8,000,000sqm of land, in different locations, all within Lagos and Ogun States of the Nigerian Federation. He is highly demanded as a conference speaker of repute, the Visionary and Real Estate Entrepreneur and Investment Consultant. He is the President of Prime Asset Housing Co-operative Multi-purpose Society Limited (PAHCMS) and founder of Realty Point Limited. Prior to starting up Realty Point Limited, 'Debo had spent nearly 9 years in the Banking Industry. He was in a middle management capacity and was responsible for a portfolio of about N1.5 billion.

Ok, enough about Debo; I actually met up with him in his office and we had a chat about his passion to educate willing Nigerians on the proper framework of investing or setting up a real estate business in Nigeria. He has set up a school for budding and real estate aficionados which would not only take you through the ABC of real estate in Nigeria but the «street smart» culture especially in Nigeria. Q: Why set up this school?

A: I discovered that the real estate industry requires informed people to move it to the next level, because of the importance of real estate; it is the focus of the economy; there is nothing you do in life that does not involve real estate. Due to its demand, it opened that business up to just anybody, especially the agency aspect of it, it can't be controlled, and anybody can be an agent. So the more untrained agents we have, the more problems we'd create in the industry.

A lot of things are happening outside of the legal frame work. Some agents get people to pay some fees before doing the job of agency and end up giving them unlivable buildings. Another is the developers or the professionals in the business, most of them don't know the nitty-gritty, and an average investor should be knowledgeable about real estate. A number of them don't, they think real estate is like stocks that they buy today and sell tomorrow but it's not like that, that is why some people want to build their own and they don't build correctly, at the time of completion, if not for the money they had spent, if they speak genuinely, they feel like pulling it down cause you'd see water level rising in the house because of bad foundation and this affects the value.

So we want to do something for the entrepreneurs, someone that is interested in real estate business and keen on knowing what to do, it could help students that are still in school before they graduate and add the entrepreneurial flavor. Our curriculum in school are not fashioned after making you an entrepreneur, they are fashioned after making you a regular employee to go look for job. If you are an entrepreneur, adding this aspect of entrepreneurial class, sharpens your entrepreneurial skill in real estate. We run courses in all the aspects of real estate; legal, real estate law, construction basic etc. there are seven courses, one case study and one seminar session, plus the orientation. These are the classes one would go through, it normally covers a period of six weekends (Sat&Sun), also is the use of information technology in real estate business, accounting, ,basic issues as to real estate agency; how to set up and run your office, how to open your account and having your business registered, how to get clients and duties to them, managing your staff, duties to your principals and vendors, turning your agency into a real estate business.

Q: If I am a worker in a bank and my mind is on real estate, will this course adequately sensitize me toward the real estate business despite the fact that I have never in my life studied real estate?

A: it will adequately do that; the course is structured in such a way that, whether one is a novice, or has little knowledge about real estate or an expert, it is important to integrate this course into your portfolio. One can also be an expert in one area of real estate or you want to broaden your knowledge across the other areas of real estate, we start on the basis of not assuming that you know anything, then we build you up to the level you can function effectively running your business, later there are advanced program that will now specialize you in other areas of real estate. This is the first course that one will need. It will interest you to know that even those who went to the university to study estate management has been attending this program, The training is a blend of class and practical and thereafter there is a mentorship program, the lecturer and the contact you make can establish you. we also have a very important tool we brought out that anybody participating in our program either directly coming to the school or having our home service pack can have even for a trial basis for thirty days, especially for those interested in investment or the agency part of the business.

Q: Is the course divided?

A: It's a single course

Q: So why specialization?

A: the course takes you through every aspect of real estate, that can make you run a business out of it, but if you want to specialize in one aspect such as being a developer, then you'll need the advanced course, or for someone who wants to be a real estate investor can build their portfolio then get an advanced course in real estate investment. Also there is an internet based community that we have wherein people share information on or for people who want to rent or buy, and that's what the business is all about, people share information in a way that can help you trade part of the information you have and this is for anybody participating in our program either directly coming to the school or having our home service pack can have even for a trial basis for thirty days, especially for the investment or the agency part of the business. This thereby helps you give good value to your principal. This is to say when you participate in this program; there are so many leverages for you.

Q: If I am not really interested in real estate, I like entrepreneurship, and I am also working right now but I am prepared to leave my job, could this be a boost if I get the home study course to read through it, are there some entrepreneurial principles I can gather to push me through.

A: especially in the case study and in the seminar session, there are a number of people who are gainfully employed and are doing real estate part time and also doing it big time, a number of them had to leave their jobs after stabilizing, so there is a way you can build it while you are at work, I usually share a principle in our orientation program, real estate is one of the easiest business to start, almost with no capital.

Q: Did you start as an agent?

A: Yes in a way, I started as an information marketer in real estate, I started by doing seminars, getting people to facilitate and by publishing a magazine, the next level was the agency aspect and from then on it was a blast and I did that without any money, it's about information, you can start it on a part time for example, marketing information where you develop into creating your own market.

Q: Is there a certification that enables banks invest into a person proven to know this business to a profitable state?

A: We give certification of participation, the program is for knowledge seekers and not for certificate seekers, however as a school we are perfecting an arrangement for a diploma program, if you finish our entrepreneurship program if you are really interested in certification especially in the area of ethics of being an agent you can start our advanced program which prepares you for certification in NIES exams, the other angle to it is what we are preparing which is having a fund that is dedicated fund to those presenting their real estate business idea. This makes money for both parties on either loan or equity arrangement, this is not necessarily from any bank, there are investors for that fund. This would be like the «Dragons Den» where there would be a panel to ascertain on the viability of the presentation.

Q: what are the challenges of the real estate business?

A: one is the legalities, real estate is all about land and it will interest you to know that nobody owns land, we only have interest in land and the interest is indicated by the document you have, and that's why we have a lot of court cases. The base commodity we have is land and it is not moveable, cannot talk, e.g. if you take a person to a land and the person pays for it, a documentation is given, if the next day you give to another person the land will not scream out no! I was sold yesterday to another person, it's the same land, you can't manufacture it and give the other person another one, so you have to be careful in your transaction, that's why a developer or agent needs to have this knowledge, just like any other kind of business you need to do due diligence in what you are marketing and who you are marketing it to, you can get a client a house after paying his initial payment, the next time of he is to pay, it becomes an issue and after legal terms come in he can live in the house for the next five year without paying a dime. Or he can live in the house and when he leaves, it can be a serious mess. So it's not so much about the money, in a nutshell,l the money is important but also the character of the client. You can lose money and can make money in real estate business, just like any other business, there are pit holes too.

Q: what can people who are already doing well in another business but want to divert some of their wealth to real estate gain out of this program?

A: a lot of people that I've met who do what I call «land lording», who go build a house and let it out have said if they had know they won't have gone into «land lording», they would better give it to a manager, or if they know what they know now, they wouldn't build were they built their house. I don't consider real estate business in Nigeria to be good if the rental income does not pay for cost of the building in maximum of ten years, you'd see a lot of this buildings around twenty years they are still trying to make up the cost of the building, and when you build for rental you need to determine the kind of tenant you want and whether you can get those kinds of tenants in the area you are building. Location is important; some people would build duplex in a place that nobody would want to live in when a flat or self-contain would have gone faster. They get less money on the duplex compare to if they had built a flat there. These are the things every investor has to know. How do I decide this is what I should go into, how do I know my returns, my projections, am I ready for the troubles of «land lording». Worldwide you still have tenants that will not pay and legality is applied in a timely fashion, not to talk of Nigeria where law takes forever.

Q: the fee for the program, how do you justify that?

A: for the material, there are some text books that would be including in that material and networking tool (data of people that are in this practice) they can contact, the typical school program that we run will just cost about fifty thousand Naira but before the end of the year it going cost about fifty-five or sixty because of some additional benefits we are bringing on board. The ones attending the program for six weekends will be spending time and money and the other guys would do theirs in the comfort of their home. My first $100 online

Handling rejection is not easy infact I dare say it is the true path to generating lasting wealth. It's not really good news that after just announcing that a thousand staffs were laid off from Bank PHB, a new 1200 staffs would be laid off by Intercontinental Bank. These executives have been rejected by the companies they trust so much to shield them economically, socially and politically. I have been receiving mails from some bank executives through this site and I could feel the spirit behind their words; it's truly heart shattering but musing and meditating over an already bad event is not going to make the event any better than it already is. This is why I am going to tell you the truth (from my perspective) about rejection.

Nobody truly likes to be rejected and the worse part of rejection is that most people take it as a report card of who they are and their activities on earth; «I am not good enough»; «I am less than Mr. XYZ», etc. These oppressive statements are truly not good for the human spirit and the more they are voiced, the more they stick to the paradigm of these individuals. This is why we unconsciously avoid rejection at all cost; we hate selling things because of the prospect of being rejected; we don't want to tell anybody about that idea because of the chance of being rejected; we don't want people to know our true economical state because we want to be accepted by some certain class of people and the lists goes on.

The pain of rejection is so real that most guys are rendered useless by it. Your dream that seemed real to you when it was envisioned can be castigated easily by you because of rejection; rejection now becomes the reality while your dream as the name implies «a pipe dream». The reality is that everybody goes through rejection but only a few people can handle it; these people are the ones that become heroes to your children and are iconoclastic. Why do most men prefer to believe the reality of the rejection rather than the reality of their dream? Why? Why? Could it mean the dream was never real in the first place? Every dream or vision goes through the rejection phase and the dreams that come out of this phase are the dreams we celebrate.

These were the words that kept me going in my first year of online business; though I started the online business with minimum cost but I was constantly rejected because I had no mentor or counselor to put me through. There was no Nigerian I knew at that time that was making money online so I had to go through rejections until I found the right formula. I knew instinctively that if I could make a hundred dollars, I could make thousands of thousands of dollars. All I needed to do was replicate the formula on a bigger scale but gaining this first 100 dollars proved stubborn. At this stage most people would have given up. During the stage of trying to attain my first $100 USD with consequent rejections, I learnt three important revelations that really had nothing to with making money directly from the online business:

Little or No Capital: I was working as an executive at this time and online business was a Plan B business. I knew I had nothing to lose because I started with little or no money (N3, 900 = $25) and leveraged on the office internet. Truth of the matter is that I had nothing to lose but I had everything to gain. I had done businesses before and I knew the money invested was a joke compared to the money I stood to gain. Imagine, a sacked executive using his severance pay to do business and losing it, when he can start with little or nothing.

Advertisement: Every business that does not enjoy dominant demand (like oil) needs to advertise; CNN puts it this way – you cannot be a hero in the dark. The bible says you need to put the candle on the stand for there to be any effect. Online presence can act as both the stand and the advertisement platform. Whatever business you are involved in, you could reduce the advertisement cost significantly by having an online presence. I sold the first book I ever authored before having an online presence and I had a hard time selling it but after the online presence, the book sold off.

Influence: I cannot begin to tell you the amount of effective friends that developed because I have an online presence. I am not talking about any kind of friends; I am talking about effective ones. The ones that can make things happen in your life if God permits. The secret of this online business is the people not the direct money you earn from it. I realized quickly that people capital is far more important than money capital.

I got to learn other lessons later in my online career but this was the three revelations I learnt while trying to make $100 dollars online. I finally made the $100 like 6 months after which subsequently led to making tens of thousands, resigned my job and living a fairly ok life. But the first $100 dollars stage was crucial to the sustenance of this site; if I had given up because of the rejections I faced, I doubt you would be reading this article right now. Hard Talk with Deolu

Mixing with great minds is the best investment I have done to myself since my adult life; I have sometimes asked myself what my life could have been without these relationships. We are where we are today based on the relationships we keep and where we would be tomorrow would be based on the relationship we cultivate today. So, it is safe to say that relationships are crucial but taking the spectator's seat and watching your relationship mate take risk, fail, stand-up and eventually succeed is not a great position to assume. This is one of the reasons I am facilitating the Online Business Workshop tagged BLOG MONEY. Click HERE to know more.

Since 5 years of successful online business, I have observed loyal followers who have watched me risk, fail, stand-up, succeed, fail again and eventually going to succeed in a bigger way. These followers have read my posts and made positive comments about my work but do not actually understand the in-road to a successful business venture in the 21^st century: It's not just having an online presence (so many people have set up blogs, forums, etc without success), it's about picking the right ingredients from the right resource to leverage whatever you want to do with your life.

Before this workshop commences on the 20^th of March, I would be exposing my readers to young millionaires who have leveraged the online business to succeed in their line of business interest. One of the great minds, I am fortunate and privilege to mix with is Deolu Akinyemi: He is the CEO of Generis Solution and one of the major players of Network Marketing in Nigeria. I have watched him leverage his online presence (www.deoluakinyemi.com) to become one of the most promising self-employed multimillionaires we have in Nigeria.

I have been trying to tackle him since his trip to India but I finally caught up with him online in Dubai. He helped me convert the Dollars I made in Holiday and Cash (H&C) to Naira and was I glad for the extra money. We later chatted and to my surprise, he informed me about the gigantic improvements that have been made in H & C and Network Marketing in Nigeria. Suddenly, I realized how having the right Online Business can be leveraged into something so huge. This is an interview I had with him concerning Network Marketing and H&C: It is a must read!

Congrats on establishing a legal framework for Network Marketing in Nigeria – National Institute of Network Marketing in Nigeria; can you give us a hint on what this would mean to all Network Marketers in Nigeria.

Thank you Dipo, it's been a 6 months project, and I'm excited we've crossed the major hurdles. The relevant ministries have approved, and we are simply dotting the «Is» and crossing the «Ts».

The implication of having this institute is birth of standards and structures for the industry in Nigeria. Just like ICAN has established accounting as a veritable profession, Network Marketers are 21^st century professionals, and it's only proper the industry operates on proper foundations of knowledge, skills and attitude requirements in Nigeria as well. It also means it will be more difficult for just any company without standards or sustainable systems to operate in Nigeria and deceive Nigerians.

I'll ask Nigerians to be patient and watch that space, as we begin to partner with reputable universities to develop and deliver a curriculum that makes it possible for people to build a career in this industry. These systems are well established in many other countries, and encourage proper people to function in the industry. Businesses fail; more out of people failure than failure of ideas. Defining a basic minimum standard of knowledge is critical to sustainable growth in any industry.

Network Marketing players (including yourself) have always advocated Network Marketing as an effective Plan B for Nigerian workforce. Is this feasible knowing full well, the kind of devotion the network marketing requires? (e.g. training attendance, sales presentation, etc)

Network marketing is a lot of work, it's no get rich quick, it however is one of the 5 options that can help people build passive income over a life time, and is the most reasonable option for someone who doesn't have as much as $1million to invest. If people are serious about their future, it's something they need to look at with an open mind. The interesting thing is that people who have the wrong perspective are not knowledgeable about the industry or the requirements of success. How many books have they read, how many DVDs have people watched? Success is not spontaneous combustion, its deliberate effort. It's a solid plan B, a true character and personal development vehicle and a business school for people who like helping people.

I also try to educate people that to work until you are 50 to begin to do any business is bordering on suicide. The first 3yrs of a company are usually its demanding years, and its learning years. Learning involves bad experiences, and shocks. People should get themselves involved and learn the basic rudiments of all businesses (lead generation, leads conversion and sales retention). Learn while you are young, better now than later.

From your experience, what does it take a very passionate and ambitious persons to be successful in any network marketing program

Every industry has their success parameters, in Real Estate its location, in Network Marketing, it's perseverance. There is a book I'm reading, my first year in Network Marketing, the author says you won't be super rich until the 10yr. You need to be willing to fail forward until you find the right company with the right model, and stick to it.

E.g. I have given myself a 10yr commitment for example, and I'm not backing down until I rank with Number 1 in any other industry.

You are one of the most successful bloggers in Nigeria; what is the correlation between owning a blog and having a successful network marketing campaign?

Sincerely there is not much of a correlation; you can succeed without owning a blog. Facebook and twitter are levelers. However, online presence is equity in the 21^st century world; if you are not there you are gradually becoming irrelevant.

For the past one year now, I realize you have been single minded concerning one particular program (Holiday and Cash). What are your motivations towards this particular program?

I had given up on the industry – due to the bitter pills of failure and the aftermaths of success without successors, but I got an experience that got me to empty my cup. I met a guy about my age that had spent 9yrs+ in the same network marketing company and become super successful and had loyal and grateful followership that I could only dream about. I decided to learn from the past, and face the future. I chose to do the opposite of what majority would do, I decided to fail forward.

I also discovered that when good people unplug themselves from any system, then evil people will dominate it. We called any music that doesn't fit our framework secular and sex merchants took over the industry, we declared politics unfit for good people and now we have rogues. I decided to occupy and not vacate.

One of the main attractions of any Direct Marketing Program is product: H&C does not seem to have any specific tangible products. What are your comments on this?

H&C has products, tangible and intangible. The tangible and intangible products in H&C are valued at more than 10 times their purchase price. Some of them when you hear will literally blow your mind. It's so good; the possibility of an upward price review is imminent.

The reason people think like that, was that in the beginning it was not so. A lot of things have been added in time, so much so that today, it's almost unthinkable not to have the privilege pack (the H&C product bundle). You can get more details by clicking HERE

You seem to be the only visible player online advocating for H&C; can you give us an example of some successful protégés.

There are many successful protégés, online and offline. If you check very well, I have not been doing direct advocacy for H&C. The internet is more a place to generate leads, not to close sales. It's an industry people join by faith and succeed by knowledge. I am careful of marketing people without knowing them, and that learning is being passed to all, so you might not see much talk online, it's deliberate.

However for an idea of successful protégés, I was in India with 35 other Nigerians in my team. We met with the rest of the world. Here in Dubai in the platinum meeting there are 7 Nigerian Couples. These are people who have grown to the highest levels in the company and are being offered shares in the global company. A few of the India pictures on my India Experience article will reveal some names. There are lots of ordinary people with extra ordinary results. There are a number of great people of who I am really proud, who have left their fulltime day jobs to face this full time.

Nigerians experienced the bitter pill of online business in 2007 with some few players (e.g. me) cashing in on it. How does H&C eliminate these kinds of scenario where only a few reap the rewards?

H&C is built on a model agreed around the world by Network Marketing Gurus to be the fairest reward plan (profit sharing plan actually). Also because the company is constantly reinvesting in creating more value for the product, even if you don't market, you gain. Imagine you have access to travel to Thailand, Dubai, Mauritius and Las Vegas without paying a dime for your hotel bills, imagine you also have e-books worth $3,000 and imagine these are just a tip of the iceberg.

The leadership program of H&C is a great opportunity for most Nigerians to experience a different cultural and geographical landscape. Tell us your experience (good and bad)?

Travel is higher education! I usually tell people there is a difference between going abroad on training and going for an all expense paid vacation. 7 days on the exotic alluring laps of luxury is beyond description – either in Egypt cruising the Nile for 3 days on a ship, the exotic tours to the pyramids and the temples of Ramses of Moses, or moving from island to island in the natural paradise of Mauritius or beholding the great sights of the Taj Mahal. It's been an experience that makes you demand more from our leaders, and gives people the privilege of expanding their horizons.

1. In 5 years time, how would H&C be relevant to the Nigerian economy and political landscape?

I'm amazed that you can see the connection clearly between the economy and the political. If you asked me 5yrs ago, I'll be excited about 5yrs. These days however I think in 10s and more. So please permit me to say that 10yrs from now, I'll be able to sound better and more excited, than a 33yr old guy I met in Malaysia that said «When this company started, the MD said that one day we will own our own country, I'm proud to tell you today that having a customer base of 5.5million people in 10yrs, this dream has already come true.» We will be relevant.

Blog Money not Blood Money

More than six thousand executives have been asked to resign from the banking industry in the last three months and it appears as if there is no end to this matter as fresh one thousand people were advised to resign from Bank PHB. There are two ways to interpret this scenario (no matter the side of the divide you fall); either you blame the CBN governor, the erstwhile bank CEOs and/or the present management team or you simply blame yourself. The latter is one of the hardest things to do but it is actually the pathway to self growth and true freedom. Rewind to pre-Sanusi era where bank executives were literarily jumping from one bank to the other for promotions and increase emoluments, I doubt it would cross the minds of these executives that the axe would fall in their industry soon.

This is exactly how it was in the days of Noah; everything seems perfectly fine with their world so how can there be dark days and worse still, experiencing something they have never experienced before seemed quite illogical. No matter what you do, no matter where you are, it is always important to bullet proof yourself against the unforeseen tide. The world is so revolutionary that a single policy, a noble invention, a suicidal citizen, a corrupt leader, etc, can create a positive or negative change to the world you live in. The world has not changed since the days of Noah, what you consider as security may turn out to be a nightmare. One of the worst things that can happen to a man is to taste a certain lifestyle and lose everything in a twinkle of an eye; from being wealthy and ending in a state of poverty – this can lead to severe depression or hypertension.

I started this blog year by telling you that only those that engage themselves in actually «doing» what they know, would profit and bullet proof themselves against being fired; my second post talked about building the power within you rather than depending on outside influence and my last post argued succinctly that depending on tithing alone as an inroad to financial success was a waste of resources. In order to epitomize my own write-ups, I have decided to expose an Effective Plan B that would not only make you earn more money than the current salary you take home; it would expose you to an unbelievable world of influence.

I am not writing «twinkle, twinkle little star», I am telling you about what I have personally handled, touched and currently experiencing. I am talking about a multimillion Naira Plan B that has changed the lives of some notable Nigerian young millionaires like Deolu Akinyemi, Gbenga Sesan, Kayode Muyibi, CFA, Seun Osewa and the list goes on. I am talking about online business; I am talking about a business that most guys have ventured in and failed because they lack the basic rudiments of what it takes to run a successful online business. With about seven thousand experienced bank executives competing in the job market, the only domain where vacancy is abundant and limitless is the internet. It is not about knowing where the opportunity is, it is about gaining the requisite knowledge from an experienced online business person in order to prosper in it.

The online business in Nigeria has so many opportunities but few legitimate players. Most of the temporal players that have ventured in have gone through the blood money approach like the Advance Free Fraud proponents (419ers) and a vast variety of internet huggers seeking for «get rich quick» schemes. I have been approached by quite few guys who wanted me to put them through in the online business as a Plan B program but most of them are thinking the online business in a blood money perspective as oppose the blog money perspective.

Here's the «Blood Money» Paradigm:

Come up with a brilliant idea.
Create/Develop/Manufacture the product or service that the idea provides.
Try to find a market for the idea.
Try to convince that market that they need that product or service.
Try to sell the idea to them at a specific price.
Pray it works.

Instead of the «Blog Money» Paradigm:

Build a Blog/Forum/Social network page/Web Site.
Provide valuable content/resources in an area of interest you are passionate about.
Attract a loyal audience of followers.
Engage and build relationships with your followers.
Find out who they are, and what their biggest challenges are.
Create a product or service to solve those challenges.
Sell it to your audience.

I have used both approaches in my 5 years of online business and I know for certain that the Blog Money paradigm has paid me far better, giving me peace of mind and increase my personal influence. Imagine making an income of 8 figures Naira equivalent using the blog money approach compared to the 4 figure Naira equivalent using the blood money approach. With the blog money approach, I have been invited to speak in platforms that I could never have dreamt of speaking in (with perks like first class tickets, best hotel rooms, car at my beck and call, etc). There is also the network of substantive friends that is developed using the blog money approach.

Those are my own testimonies for my own way of running my online business; each successful online business men I mentioned above, have their own style but the blog money paradigm is the same for all of them. The blog money approach is like the compound interest I mentioned in my earlier post; «2010 Prophetic Insight». It may appear so small and insignificant but the potential is huge; this is why so many Nigerians have disregarded this approach and lean towards the blood money approach. What they fail to understand is that the blood money approach requires more work than the blog money approach with no peace of mind, no future opportunity and seldom streams of income. Imagine a 419 fraudster writing a long mail and sitting in the internet café all night waiting for a «maga» to pay.

The Delusion of Tithing

One story that keeps coming to mind is the widow of Zarephath and her ability to give out her last meal to a man she hardly knew. This particular story was strongly impressed on my mind during a financially tight month in my life – no profit (infact it was a loss) for that month so I deluded myself into believing that it automatically equaled no tithe. Oh was I shocked during one of my family routine prayers that I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to give far more than I had been giving on a monthly basis (don't mind me; the salary habit is still in me). On a serious note, this was a struggle for me; «how can I tithe on a loss and to make it worse (or should I say better), I was expected to give five times my average?»

Almost 2 years ago, I wrote an article on Tithing titled «Tithe or Tight»; it is imperative you read it before delving deep into this article; you may click HERE to read it. Tithe as it is general agreed by the Evangelicals, is giving one-tenth of your increase (profit) to God. This particular definition may have been a stumbling block to accessing the promises inherent in tithing. Wait! Let me point out that there have been series of abuses for this particular concept called tithing. I have witnessed firsthand that religion is actually the opium of people – people can literarily «die» to protect a religious view rather than a Godly view. This people rely so much on a laid out culture/tradition that has guided their religious assembly that it becomes difficult to respond to their inner promptings.

The ineffectiveness of tithing is actually premised on the neglecting the inner prompting of the Spirit and embracing the cultural norm. Cultural norms are inherently faulty – from the interpretation of what tithing should be and the expected result. First of all, is the issue of physical blessing – about 98% of those who practice tithing in Nigeria do it to gain physical blessing whether it is financial or health inclined (this statistics is simply empirical). And the number one reference would be Malachi 3: 10 –

«Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of Hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it»

I am not going to go into any interpretations because I believe the Holy Spirit shall reveal that to you if you yield yourself to Him. However, I shall deal with the expectation regarding the physical blessing. The blessing that was revealed in this particular chapter has nothing to do with physical blessing. Well, I guess I have to do the interpretation or I may never be able to do justice to this article. The verse above simply means God will open our hearts and minds, that is remove the scales or veil (our carnal opinions and theories about God) from the mind's eye. The removal of this veil from our mind's eye is the window of heaven opening in us, whereby the Messiah's words that are Spirit and Life are received and understood within us. The blessing he is bestowing on us is spiritual in nature.

Ok, I hope I have not burst the bubbles of those who say; «ever since I paid my tithe, I have never been sick or my finances have not been wasteful ever since I tithe or my X financial worth became 2X ever since I have started tithing». All these statements are delusional and lack any biblical truth. The deeper meaning of these aforementioned statements is that God has become a merchant that you procure good health from or a money «doubler» that increases your finances based on your input to progress His kingdom activities: For by grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast.

In some circles, there are arguments concerning paying tithe or not; tithe is the Lord's not yours so it is essential to pay. The percentage of what to pay may be confusing – while some say 10^th of your increase, others say 10^th of your salary. It is a general agreement that the former be used for the independent business operators whiles the latter for the workforce. This takes the confusion to an utter high because if a salary earner thinks like a business man, he would remove the transportation, tax, vehicle maintenance, etc cost from their salary before tithing on the remainder. This is why a general rule does not work; this is why every man should know God for himself – God is more interested in uniqueness rather than conformance.

It is a complete delusion to believe that the gateway to physical wealth is by tithing (whether you agree with it consciously or sub-consciously): Thus, tithing would express worship to God; tithing would indicate to you, your love for God through the support of God's Kingdom; tithing would continually remind you that God is your source, tithing would reduce greed, selfishness and materialism in your life and finally tithing would open the windows of heaven in your life where God would speak to you directly. If God speaks to you directly, you are wealthier than the richest man in the world. This is why you must learn to lean on the inner prompting of the Spirit rather than culture of your general assembly. The inner prompting of the Holy Spirit becomes strengthen in your life when you obey Him and would fade away each time you disobey. Have a lovely week!

The POWER Within

Freedom is a concept that I am very interested in and like I have mentioned in my earlier posts, freedom has nothing do with being self-employed; you could be gainfully employed and be at a higher level of freedom than someone who is self-employed. You may read my earlier article; «Before you leave that job» to get a good grasp of what I am saying. One of the major words associated with freedom is independence (from external stimuli like person, organization, etc). The less you depend on the external body, the freer you have become.

My search for a job after my compulsory one year military service exposed me to an insight that has guided me throughout my career. There is nothing as demoralizing, heartrending and pathetic as competing with your peers for a limited position. The most painful part of this experience is the lack of awareness that there are better alternatives. Wait! I think I should correct myself; I believe we were aware but on a subconscious level, but we chose to stick to pursuing a goal that had a 99% chance of not happening – thirty thousand fresh graduates seeking for ten advertised position.

It actually seems like madness but it keeps happening again and again; we keep pursuing dead-end situations; it almost seems as if we enjoy the wild goose process rather than the end. Day-in day-out, people jump from one test center to the other, hoping (earnestly hoping) that it would be different this time, but it remains the same. Fast forward to present times, I realize the same program functioning; we are looking for the «in» thing; we are focusing all our power and energy depending on a path that we are subconsciously aware would produce the same failed result – why jump into an MLM program when you know it would fail? Why? When you know only a few people would reap the benefit just like the limited advertised position?

A story in the bible aroused my interest (John 5); it was about an impotent man in the midst of other impotent men (the bible referred to these impotent men as lame, blind, paralyzed limbs, etc). These impotent men struggled to get into a pool that had the potential to heal them but there was one limitation – only one person can be healed at a season – the first person to jump into the pool. This caused the said impotent man to dwell in the same position for thirty eight (38) years waiting seasons upon seasons without ever achieving his dream of being potent.

The solution to this impotent man's problem was an alternative to the pool; he dwelt so much on the pool as a panacea that frustration set in (38 years); «I can't be potent for I have no one to help me into the pool at the movement of water. While I am trying to enter, someone else always gets in ahead of me». Does this man's situation sound familiar? It sounds very familiar to me; when I could not get a job on time, I blamed my parents lack of connection; when my salary was not commensurate with my peers, I blamed the company I worked for; when my business was not succeeding amidst friends that were succeeding, I blamed my choice of business and ultimately the government.

I never cared to look at another alternative; it was an alternative that was easy to figure out but somehow, we miss it. Jesus told the impotent man; «stand up, roll up your sleeping mat and go home». I was inspired with this advice during those job-hunting days that in one of the test centers crammed with about twenty thousand fresh graduates, I refuse to take the recruitment test instead I stood up, rolled up my sleeping mat and went home. I decided to depend on the power within me; I researched, developed and created my first book – it was a book for job seekers. It increased my financial worth till I wanted more, so I joined the bank.

I realized something quite funny; I developed the power within me instead of running a wild goose chase that when I joined the bank, I rose up in ranks faster than my peers. Hence, I stuck to this winning formula – always develop the power within you and with time, you would be the leader. Forget about the external stimuli – your salary has not been increased for some time, focus on developing the power within you rather than join your peers complaining. If you focus on developing the power within you, a company that is better would appear in your radar.

Standing up (or developing the power within you) is not as easy as I am making it appear; it involves some certain process that you must pass through. It is by developing the power within you that you gain you more freedom. The stories are all over the place – a certain accountant friend of mine was earning 35K a month and keeps complaining, he developed the power within himself through certifications and now works with Oando for 500K a month. A theater arts graduate with no hope for a good paying job in Nigeria developed the power within her with a degree in film making and has produced the first Nollywood film on a 35mm Camera with Hollywood actors.

The moral of this article is simple; your destiny is neither in the hands of any person nor organization; if you develop the power within you, you would surprise yourself. The process of standing may require a lot of fallings but when you stand, you stand. The mat in the Bible story above signifies all the resources that is within you (talent, money, people, etc.). Jesus did not say, take another person's mat, He said; «roll up your own mat». Please, I would appreciate it if you do not ask me what the latest business is instead ask me what can you engage in to develop the power within you. Have a lovely week!

YOU'RE FIRED!

These are definitely two words that scare the living day light out of almost every executive although endearing words have been cooked up to replace them – from downsizing to laying off. The effect is the same; the fact that some group of people that wanted you suddenly found you repulsive for whatever reason (I don't think the victims care). Last year December alone, more than 5, 000 bank executives were relieved of their jobs and if the bank drama continues, more bank executives would feel the impact of the axe.

Anyway, Happy New Year! I have been on a project that needed my full concentration and I am happy to announce to you that I am back. This year comes with great tidings and also great insight into our everyday life phenomenon; everything is on deck to produce articles that would stimulate your minds, arrange your thoughts and motivate you towards successful living but there is definitely a caveat, especially to those who enjoy reading my articles.

Reading without active participation is a waste of your precious time; you are not just wasting the time you should be using to increase your personal worth, you are cramming your mind with provocative information that would render you inactive towards productivity. The worst thing a man can do to himself is to have multiple visions for his life or being in an «unsure» state. This means any wind can take you to any destination it deems fit.

You should be sure of the destination despite the hazy nature of the process. This is why things like being «fired» should not cause the kind of emotional repression it does to its victim. In the film; «UP IN THE AIR»; you would get to see a clear picture of what people go through when they are fired. If you have not watched this outstanding film, you can pick it up via Mobile Moviz. Getting fired is actually a report card of what you have learnt in life – it shows different perspective to different people – to some; it says it's time to move to greater things – to some; it says you are not the right fit for this organization – to some others; it says your skill is not important enough for consideration.

All in all, you did not play your cards right, so you got booted out; the problem thus becomes getting booted out instead of booting yourself out. The organization gives you a habit and decides to take away that habit from you – you must get to work before 8am and leave at 6pm and now you can do whatever you feel like doing with your time. I believe this is actually the most painful part of the whole drama (even more painful than the economic disempowerment) – the ability for a man to alter your habit at his own discretion.

Habit is the single most important element of man – though we are not our habit, our habit defines us. It can act as a map to our future; someone can review your habit and can extrapolate your future. Your neighbors or colleagues at work don't know who you are, they can only guess from your habit. The success of any man can be attributed to his habits but something quite funny about habits is that when they are formed over time, they are very hard to remodel.

A good example is Andre Agassi – one of the best lawn tennis players of all time. In his self-authored biography titled «open», he described his hatred for lawn tennis but through his childhood habit of rigorous training for lawn tennis success, he found it difficult to break. Habit can thus make you hate something and be the best at it. Most people under-estimate the power inherent in forming a habit, it is so powerful that it can define the characters of your fifth generation.

This is why this year, I would be focused on those who have or are willing to form the habit of reading and doing rather than just reading. The people who do what they know are far better than those who simply know – no matter the failures experienced by those that do, they are in every position better than those that do nothing. You can sit at your desk, read, assimilate, make comment, analyze, call me to discuss my articles but if you are not doing what you know, you are as good as not reading my articles at all.

In Luke chapter 5, Jesus made a distinction on those who listen to his words and those that do his words. By the Lake of Gennesaret, were a crowd of people listening to him and a bunch of people doing work. The people doing the work have just arrived from a failed expenditure but this did not matter to Jesus as he was drawn to them. He later showed them a successful way of doing the work. Those who listen alone are always in the crowd and they chase after Jesus while those that do the work are few and Jesus goes after them. Those that do the work are always successful despite their initial failures.

Few months after the mid of last year, I introduced the CAR VACUUM CLEANER competition which dealt primarily on selling. This competition was developed by me to aid the Nigerian work force develop the skill of selling which is undoubtedly a prized asset. I got a sizeable number of readers participating; some tried and failed; some had initial failures but picked up; some had initial success and failed to keep the initial pace; some were successfully constant all through. I would like to use this medium to appreciate those that participated in this competition and to let them know that whether they failed or succeeded, they have sown the seed of greatness and would speak for them all through their endeavors. Whether you are fired or employed, the skill of selling would always come in handy. 2010 Prophetic Insight

One of the greatest minds of the 20^th Century – a philosopher and a scientist – Albert Einstein said; «doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is insanity». A sizeable number of literatures have interpreted this quote to mean that if you want to change your life, you must change what you are doing. If your business is tanking, it's time to see if there is an alternative path you could guide your venture along. The more I read the quotation, the more I disagree with the above assertion. Albert Einstein, a man who has won so many accolades from outstanding school of thoughts like the Time Magazine's Man of the Century, could not have made this quote from the interpretations made by these literatures. The New York Times issue of 27^th May, 2009 revealed a question asked Albert Einstein; «what the greatest invention of all time was?» His answer was «compound interest».

For you to experience compound interest, you must do the same thing over and over again through a protracted period of time. During the challenging periods of not working in a formal organization, I was comforted by God, every time I was tempted; one of the stories that flashed my mind was in the bible; it was about some entrepreneurs, who dealt in fishing; on a particular day, they had done all they could, but result was not in sight. Frustrated and dejected, a stranger asked them to lend him their boat and they obliged. After using the boat to address some people, the stranger asked them to do the same thing they have been doing all day. Naturally, they complained but did it anyway, the result was the opposite of what they experienced earlier on; this was how it was reported in the book of Luke; « when they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break.»

Compound interest is actually one of the greatest powers in the universe; it always starts so slowly and ridiculous that it is ignored by a lot of people. One of the best examples of compound interest that I was told was from an Agel proponent named Sola Popoola; he cited a 30 day experiment; if you live in Lagos and you were asked to fly to Abuja to collect one naira knowing that if you come every day, the money you would collect would double the previous amount. This means if you fly to Abuja on Monday to collect N1; on Tuesday, you would collect N2; on Wednesday, you would collect N4; on Thursday, you would collect N8, etc. Would you prefer take this round trip to Abuja everyday for 30days or you would rather just take one million naira now. Let's face it, why should anyone stress himself everyday to do the first scenario when he can just take the one million naira now and the amount you are going to collect in the first scenario appears ridiculous. If you patiently do the Arithmetic, you would realize that the first scenario would not just break your account but it is the true path to freedom.

This is how the figure goes:

1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536, 131072, 262144, 524128, 1048256, 2096512, 4192034, 8386048, 16772096, 33544192, 67088384, 134176768, 268353536, 536707072

At the end of the 30 days, you will be making approximately 537 Million Naira; even if the round trip flight is 50K daily which is equivalent to 1.5 Million Naira; it is coins compared to what you stand to gain. This is exactly how compound interest works; it looks ridiculous and ordinary at the beginning but spirals into something larger than you can imagine: The key is constancy! The ability to stay true to something you believe despite the external reception and perception. There is nothing as discouraging as doing the same thing again and again especially if you a company executive being told when to work and when to lunch; boredom sets in because the initial challenge has been resolved; it seems like you are moving like a zombie but whatever you are doing at the moment lies the seed to your destiny. The ability to see the importance of what you are doing lies in the compound interest perspective. If you put a different perspective to what you are doing at the moment, you would see amazing results.

Your thoughts should not be focused on change but on the energies that can be harnessed in what you are doing at the moment. I know it's kind of difficult like the fish entrepreneurs that toiled all night and caught nothing and are told to do the same thing they have been doing. I can imagine their thoughts when they were told; «this guy is insane; does he have an idea what it takes to do what I do; I have tried this business and I know the inside out of it, it does not work in Nigeria; people are just not feeling it as they should; I am chasing a pin in the hay stack because nobody has ever achieved in these fields». You can give all the excuses you want but changing what you do does not solve the problem because what you are changing to poses its own sets of challenges; and if you have not developed the ability to go through challenges and be successful, then you are just taking unnecessary journeys like the Israelites chasing the promise land.

The catch clause is; «launch to the deep»; go deeper than you have always been doing because there is gold in it. When it feels like you have exhausted all the options, it's time to get a new eye. It's time to adopt the compound interest perspective; no matter how insignificant it appears, just continue doing it. It is the constancy that breeds the power; you don't have to pray 1 hour on Sunday and forget to pray till the next Sunday; just take as little as 10 minutes every day to speak and listen to your Heavenly father. Remember, whatever you do, there is a deeper level you have not touched that is why the problem persists; you can harness the fish entrepreneurs principle – give whatever you have to God despite your current situation and listen to His perspective on the issue; it would definitely shift your perception and your face would be crammed with smiles.

Tiger Woods Saga

Immediately you saw this picture, what was your first impression? It is important you take 2 minutes to reflect on this. The impression you get from this particular picture says a lot about you; when I saw this picture, I laughed so hard and tears started flowing from my eyes. The picture was quite ridiculous though it held a lot of meaning to me – the picture ironically reflected a similarity between these two sworn enemies; both of them strongly oppose same sex «marriage or sexual relationship». Another thing quite interesting is the fact that Osama was made the husband which could simply interpret that Osama would always have a higher authority to Bush in any combat. In most circles, Osama is regarded as the bad guy while Bush, the good guy. After imagining this last statement in my mind, I realize that I was suffering from what Psychologists call Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE).

If I ask you to describe your best friend, you would definitely say good things like he/she is fun, loyal, etc but if I ask your best friend's enemy to describe him, you know it would amount to negative comments. If your best friend's name is Sola, it simply means Sola as you describe him/her is not the absolute character he/she possesses but we describe humans based on our experience with them or what a third party tells us about them. This is one of the greatest injustice of man to man and one of the many blind spots we develop as entrepreneurs. People make funny assumptions about me especially people that have done business with me for a while; they say things like; «I know you Dipo», then I reply them; «how can you know me when I really don't know myself». Extending an absolute identity to someone is denying your own identity. No one in life is a constant; you can never place a human in a box based on your prior experience:

If you ask my friends from high school to describe me, the behavioral character they would use in describing me would be diametrically opposite to how my undergraduate colleagues would describe me. While in high school, they may call me a party freak; in university, they would call me a pastor but the truth is I am neither a party freak nor a pastor. I believe I have the power to exhibit those personalities but those labels do not accurately describe me. What do all these have to do with entrepreneurship? Relax! Let me land. Your success as an entrepreneur does not lie in how the world perceives you or what the world expects from you but how true you are to what you know of yourself. Denying yourself for the purpose of gain (either monetary or fame), is equivalent to slavery. Each time you deny yourself for a perceived security, you are losing your power to exert influence; if you are masqueraded with a position, it won't be long before the position becomes your identity instead of you giving the position an identity.

You are who you are because of what your peers think of you; you are highly driven by your social think tank. You have no sense of direction; you are earnestly waiting for the approval of someone who cannot articulate his/her direction. Death is definitely inevitable, so what would you have lived for. One of the readers of this blog (quite unemployed), who bought the car vacuum cleaner was finding it difficult selling it in his church. After exhausting his complaint; I told him the easiest and the most socially driven people on this earth are church-goers. Just look for a highly influential person in a group, give him/her a good deal, let him/her endorse the product and you would be running out of order. Well, this was not a word of prophesy or word of knowledge, because it materialized the way I said it; this was common sense; people always follow people, they hardly trust their own judgment. His testimony was predictable; «can you imagine, all the people that rejected me, are now booking and struggling to get it.»

When the news of Tiger Woods affair broke, it actually surpassed Obama's important speech on Afghanistan, despite the fact that the news was 6 days stale. The reaction of the world to the news was overwhelming; there was a shift in the world's paradigm towards the first billionaire athlete. People have placed him in a certain box and expected him to stay that way, when they realize that their labels were false, they reacted vehemently. Even Tiger's apology (which was made because he was caught not because he regretted his action) did not appease some of his endorsement deals from getting cancelled. This simply means if the world makes you, they can also take you down; if the world determines the standard of life that you live, they would punish you for breaking it. The Tiger Wood's Saga is deeper than right or wrong; it's about humans, with the same frailties, are able to judge another human because he appears to be more popular, wealthier, and more aware of his talent and maximizing it. Since every situation in life is unique, it would be difficult to fill his shoes and judge.

Seeing things from a multiple perspective is a must-have skill for entrepreneurs; every decision is crucial to an entrepreneur's growth and success; so making a decision from peer pressure or world view would definitely harm you in the long run. Since, we see things as we are; it is important to note that your view of Tiger Wood's suppose transgression is based on your person. It is ironical that the conservatives find it difficult to forgive (death penalty proponents, gun owners, capitalist, etc) and they cry out to God of mercies. The moral of this saga is simple: «don't be caught!» because the world has condemned the wrong doer and the wrong doing saying that the wrong doer and his act are the same. This is definitely a false premise and an absolute false conclusion. The wrong doer is definitely not the same with the wrong doing though the wrong doer made a conscious choice (albeit) to do wrong. Ability to separate the wrong doer from his/her habit is not a common skill but it is what we are called to as sons of God. God is pleased with the wrong doer that decides to choose heavenly traits rather than hellish ones. We were loved by God despite our wrong doings, why can't we extend the same love to our fellow brothers. Have a wonderful week!

Chasing Waterfalls...

Actually going on the self-employed route is more like gambling and for most degenerate gamblers, it is not the end that drives them but the thrill of the possibility, the chance of recognition, the chemical high of anticipation, etc. They get more excited by the process rather than the endgame. For most people who have taken this self-employment journey, they would realize that the ebb period of any business they venture in would make them question their motive(s) for taking the plunge: Why do I really want to go out on my own? What is my endgame? How do I know when I have achieved what I set out for? Compare the questions above with the question that may be haunting you presently: I want to leave because I am bored? I am facing difficulties at the work place? Self employment would ultimately make me very wealthy? It is important to clarify the answers to these questions because when you place the two sets of questions together (when you are challenged as a self employed and when you are about to leave your job), you would come up with the third most important question you need to ask yourself before leaving your job – what is your purpose on this earth?.

In the previous posts of this particular series, I explained two significant questions that a paid employed executive should ask him/herself before taking the plunge; the questions are simple but evoke powerful meditations: «do I want more responsibility and restrictions?» You may click HERE to read more on this. «What is my net worth?» You may click HERE to read more on this. The third question would definitely give you the right perspective and be able to clarify your goals and aspirations in life and localize it to every decision you decide to make. For everything you are facing right now (e.g. your boring work; your overbearing boss; etc) is a seed to your destiny and your persistent attempt to disconnect with it indicates your lack of understanding of what it means to be in congruent with your purpose. An obese lady that decides to slim must first acknowledge and love her present body; taking ownership of her present body is critical to the sliming process. If not, the tendency to backslide during the process or return to the original size after losing several pounds is inevitable.

The Obese lady rationalizes her reasons; «my husband likes slim ladies»; «all my friends are slim»; «the world agrees that slim ladies are beautiful»; «obese ladies are perceived as being lazy»; «obese ladies always have health issues». No matter how valid these reasons are, she would never be slim; even if she successfully loses some weight, the chances of returning to her prior state are 99.9%. The concept of acceptance and ownership must be displayed and formed in her attitude where she is not enslaved by external thoughts but the inner driving of her spirit and conscience. The litmus test is quite easy and it's not congruent with a purposeful individual: Any form of showery, sucking-up and delusion is definitely not parallel to purpose. To put it plain and simple; if you are concerned about what people think about you; if you buy a new car because your friends are buying new cars; if you place yourself in a pseudo level that you think some people are beneath you; then self employment is not for you.

Successful self employed people are inert to circumstances, values and emotions like guilt, resentment, anger, materialism and need for approval. The executive leaving his job for self employment is likened to an obese lady losing some pounds. The executive should understand that he/she is simply gambling with every aspect of his/her life (economic, social, political, geographical, etc) except he/she can define his/her purpose on this earth. Knowing your purpose gives meaning to your life, simplifies your life, motivates you, focuses your life and prepares you for eternity. All these attributes are necessary elements to your success as a self employed person. You cannot know your true purpose on earth without a personal relationship with God; this is very vital to knowing your purpose. Bertrand Russell, an atheist, concurs with this truth by saying; «unless you assume a God, the question of life's purpose is meaningless.»

Without purpose, whatever decision or direction, we plan to take is like chasing waterfalls. Continuously improving what you're doing now rather than gravitating towards the latest shooting star idea (which of course is more fun) or jumping at untested waters. Waterfalls are pretty and fun to watch but there is gold in the river that you are used to. Whatever you are doing now, no matter how boring or challenging it appears to be, inherent in it lays the treasure to your destiny. In as much as I am a proponent of entrepreneurship and freedom; I do not believe in purposeless pursuits and do not endorse an untested direction that you have all the opportunity to test. Your heart may be thumping and everything within you may be craving for this route to self employment but slow down dear, chasing intangible dreams with no thought of the consequences it may have on your family, is totally irresponsible.

What is your Net Worth?

If you want to be successful as a self-employed person, this is the second question you must ask yourself before you leave your current job. It is quite imperative to read the first part of this ongoing series before delving into this article: Click HERE to read it. This was supposed to be the last question I wanted to expatiate on but I got an important question in the comment box that made me realize how crucial it was to discuss this particular perspective. The question from Deji goes thus:

«I am trying to go it on my own but the challenge I face now is getting financiers who are not asking for an arm and a leg in return. Tell me, how did you handle funding for your business? I would appreciate your insight»

Let me start by telling you a secret I found out: «money is a byproduct of doing something well and marketable». Looking for money is not that imperative when going on your own; I lost some of the money I saved up during my first year of leaving my job because of bad decisions which comes from lack of experience and bad judgment. What you need is to accumulate experiences and grow a network base; if you can successfully do this, then you would start rejecting money like I do.

I have a microfinance bank literarily begging to give me money; I have some Nigerians in Diaspora who are constantly telling me they are ready to give me money if I can forward them a business proposal; almost all the products and goods that I sell are not mine; people send me stuffs on credit and the list goes on. Finance is the least of your problem if you can prove competency; competency can only be proved through series of experiences; experiences are obtained by learning from failed projects. So you see, the cycle goes round and round.

What I am trying to tell you is that the best way to succeed on your own is to leverage on integrity not on money. Money is a means to an end. There would be no purpose in earning money, in saving it, or even stockpiling it under your bed if it had no buying power. So, what you really like when you say you like money is what money can buy. Money is a byproduct; let me repeat it again, money is a byproduct, a side-effect, a spin-off; money should not be what you are after, what you should be concerned about is integrity. Your aim should be doing all your best to build integrity in whatever field you venture in. Once the integrity is built, then money is the aftermath. You do not need the kind of money you are looking for to build integrity.

Integrity does not jump on you from the sky; you need to obtain it through some sort of sacrifice. The whole concept of branding is based on building integrity but before a product becomes a brand, it undergoes series of investment. I remember a business seminar in Ibadan I was invited to speak at; and one of the participants asked me a question concerning capital for business. So, I asked if he was more interested in capital or the profit. He said he needed the capital to make the profit. So I quizzed him further; «can you see a way you could make the profit without the capital?»

If your answer is NO like the participant's answer, then you are not ready to leave that job. I would not advise anybody that wants to leave his job to source for capital; I would advise the person to develop a third eye for the business through a minimum of one year internship in the business. During this one year, the person would understand «ebb and the flow» period of the business; the person would witness firsthand what was done during the ebb period to survive it. The person would begin to question him/herself if he/she has the temperament to sustain such periods and what could be done to make such periods worthwhile.

Your internship also gives you the opportunity to develop networks with your target audience; you would be able to gauge your level of influence to sink the product/service you are interested in. This is one of the most crucial aspects of slugging it out on your own; the ability to gauge your level of influence. This is one of the reasons I introduced the Car Vacuum Cleaner program so you can gauge the level of influence you have with your own colleagues you laugh, gist, pray, etc with. Just because you talk to someone does not mean you can influence the person; you do not need to find that out when you have left your job; it may be too late then.

Seriously, it does not have to be the Car Vacuum Cleaner, it can be any other product/service but you must prove to yourself that you can assert some level of influence before you leave that job. When you can ascertain this influence and integrity, it gives you a sense of security that you can survive whatever comes your way; the real illusion about money is that it creates security. Security does not come from accumulating wealth. I know many people who are extremely wealthy and still very insecure. In fact, if you feel insecure right now, having more money will only increase your feelings of insecurity, since you will then have even more to lose. This is why I do not support people who want capital to start-up, I prefer they gain experience first.

If someone asked you today to state your net worth, what would your answer be? In what context would you be inclined to estimate your worth? Most people tend to equate their personal worth with whatever material assets they possess. You are NOT your net financial worth. Your real worth lies in your ability to create. All of your skills, your knowledge, attitudes, education, experience, and contacts are worth a great deal more than anything else you own. Your real bank account consists of whatever makes all the rest of it possible. People who are truly secure know that if everything were taken away from them today, they would still have the means of getting it all back. Whatever they did once, they can always do again.

This is where I stop on the second question you must ask yourself before you leave your job; «What is your net worth?» And remember, if you work smart, you can then play hard….

Before You Leave That Job!!!

Actually, this post is not for everybody – it's for some group of courageous guys that have been contemplating leaving their 8-6 work. The red and the blue pill have been placed in front of them and their heart is consciously leaning towards the red pill. I am actually having these disturbing feelings that after you finish reading through this article, you may decide NOT to go with it (lol). Ok, let's get to the crux of the matter; a friend who willingly left his job 9 months ago to try out his hands on his dreams of becoming self employed, decided to go back to being employed.

The reason he gave for returning; «Bros. it's not easy out there and I wonder how you do it?» Seriously, I had to ask myself the same question but I quickly realized after listening to his story that there really is no band-aid quick fix formula to this «leave work, go on your own» attitude. Instead, I gathered three distinct questions one should ask oneself before taking this adventurous path in life. This isn't the Matrix movie, bro; this is real life altering decision that can ruin your marriage, your children, your friendships, and your career if not handled with caution (I hope I have not scared you; well, let's see):

Before I delve into the questions, I would like to reiterate the fact that freedom is the ultimate purpose for every human heart. We yearn for it; we dream of it; we fight for it; we work for it; we cry for it and the list goes on. BUT we have a definition of freedom that totally is amiss with what true freedom is really is. When you hear the word; «freedom»; tell me, what comes to mind? It is the first thing that comes to your mind that paints your world view of the concept of freedom. Please, do not tell me to define it; because I cannot.

What I can tell you is that freedom equates to more responsibility. When, you tell someone that you want to be free, what you are telling the person is that you want to be more responsible. Though, it's kind of ironical because the word as it is commonly used connotes some sense of irresponsibility: lazying in the beach of Bahamas, experiencing a Chinese massage in your Burj al arab Suite in Dubai, shooting crap at Macau Island famous cockpit, exploring the coliseum at Rome, rooting for your favorite premiership team at the stadiums in England, etc. (Please, bury these thoughts….)

Freedom can also be conceptualize subjectively; a guy that works 8-5 daily may see freedom as not having to report himself to any boss while an unemployed guy may see freedom as having to work 8-5 daily. Another very funny statement I hear from ladies about to get married is that when they get married, they would be free from their parents. I guess their meaning of freedom is no external restraint whatsoever. They (the ladies) fail to understand that the restraint becomes tighter because they are married; definitely, the parents would be more understanding than their husband in the lady's shortcomings and with the introduction of children, the lady is definitely in a leach.

Any gig you find yourself without a certain level of restraint is total calamity; freedom thus comes with its restraint and responsibility. After God made Adam and placed him in the Garden; his first assignment was to work while his restraint was based on not eating a particular tree of 'good and evil'. It's important to note that freedom comes with certain level of restraint and responsibility and if you want more freedom, you are seeking for more responsibility and restraint. So before, you leave that job; ask yourself the question; «do I want more responsibility and more restraint?»

This is the first question you need to ask yourself; please, do not be fooled into believing that there is less restraint or the responsibility is less. Those who want to be successful going on their own know the enormous restraint they face; you do not just spend cash any how or you develop cash flow problems; your decisions are more scrutinized and analyzed or you end up in your parents house; say bye-bye to family holidays in London or you want your children's school fees pilling up. Now concerning responsibility: If you are the kind that complain about how tedious and stressful your work is, please don't bother going on your own; if you are the kind that patiently waits for 5pm, so you can run home, don't bother about going on your own.

Going on your own requires you have more bosses (your customers), your time is totally restricted though you can choose your time to work, you have to make more friends and network to sink your products or service, you have to smile more not because you are required to but you must, you have to solve the issues that confront you because you cannot pass the buck and your level of success is tied to issues solved, your time management must on point or you would be like the Nigerian artisan group that promise to deliver a service but fail, the sentence «I am sorry» should be in your dictionary because you cannot please everybody, having employees working for you is another issue all together.

I hope I have not scared you yet because there are two other questions I have not mentioned. Well, I have to do something about that in the next post. The Number One question: «do I want more responsibility and more restraint?» If yes! Then wait to answer the next two questions in the posts to come. What can I say dear? The Evolving Times

Somehow, somewhat, I have been getting a lot of invitations for functions with each person telling me how important my presence would be. Seriously, functions are not my thing especially the ones that do not have any «learning» theme. Well, in order to maintain my friendship with these people, I got to compromise; tough luck! Ok, yesterday was a naming ceremony and I had to travel seven mountains and seven seas to get to a place in Lagos coupled with seriously bad roads. Well, I really did not find it funny until I saw the baby boy:

Just in a flash, something occurred to me; it was strange when I felt it but it was a powerful revelation. This baby boy would grow and become a man; he would also invite his friends one day to his own baby's naming ceremony. For this baby to grow physically he needs food; for this baby to grow mentally, he needs some form of education feed; for this baby to grow spiritually, he needs to feed on spiritual diet. There is one other variable, I failed to mention: TIME. As long as the baby is healthy and he feeds well, growth is inevitable with time.

This same analogy can be used for anything your hand finds to do; as long as you continue feeding it, time is all you need. The problem with most people is time; most people are aware of the right diet to apply but cannot just wait the time. The issue is further compounded when they assume the grass is greener at the other side so they abort their present baby due to the discomfort they feel; they stop applying the right diet; they stop nurturing, they stop caring. The ability to persevere and stick to something is the only difference between success and failure.

The success we have today is a function of sticklers; when you stick to something, then the element called LUCK (right place, right time) would definitely show up. No matter how much you shadow Bill Gates – read all his books, attend his seminars, even work with him, you can never be like him. Even the sons and daughters of great men, we respect, do not become great. Your ability to become great is based on the vision you have inside of you; if the vision is clear, it's time to start feeding it and allow time to take control.

Everybody that has become a world icon experience the LUCK (right place, right time) factor but this LUCK would not come if you do not stick to what you are doing. Some great biblical examples like Moses who was tending his father-in-law's sheep with a stick; it was the same stick that Moses used in liberating a whole nation. Other good examples are David, who stuck to raising and defending his father's sheep, he was also able to save the nation of Israel from Goliath and Joseph, who was a great visionary leader in Potiphah's house and prison but was elevated to the King's palace.

I would not attempt to convince you that these men were not tempted to boycott the process; in fact they tried to, but it ended up badly. The truth is that in as much as a pregnant lady can carry a child for 9 months despite the discomfort along the way and the eventual child bearing, there is nothing we cannot do, to give birth to our dreams. The reason the pregnant lady could easily transit the process is because she knows that a child would eventually show up and the same reason would have applied to the man with the dream except the man with the dream is not sure is dream would manifest.

At times, the issue lies with the dreamer not choosing the right dream. If your dream is certain like Adam's was when he said; «This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh». This same assertion should apply to any dream worth chasing.

Now, after you are certain of the dream, you now have to feed it and contend with the evolving times. Feeding it is not as easy as I am making it because most people do not see result despite feeding so they get discouraged. I remember chatting with one of the highest intrapreneur of the Car Vacuum Cleaner; he worked with one of the highest paid company in Nigeria so I was curious as regards his passion for the product. His answer was simple but powerful;

«I want to learn how to sell; there is nobody that can sell that can be unemployed or broke; it is the only skill that can ensure your economic security. Despite the fact that XYZ Company has low turnover of staffs and working condition is relatively great; I can never be sure of tomorrow. My tomorrow lies with gaining the skill that cannot impoverish me and my family. Anyway, my dream is to be on my own one day doing ABC; I am not interested in the money per se though the change is useful in some instances, I am interested in feeding my future dream.»

There is also the evolving times to contend with; the world changes in a drastic way. The whole talk of sustainable energy can affect his industry greatly. Just 9 years ago, if I wanted to communicate with my fiancé, I would send a mail that took minimum of three weeks to get to her hand. Now, all I need to do is send an SMS and it would get to her in 5 seconds. The times are really evolving at an astronomical rate and nothing seemed impossible to construct as the world progresses.

I remember my growing-up days when my dad came back from Germany with a Grundig 21 inch Colored TV. At this time, all my neighbors and friends had was «black and white» TV with Betamax Player. I felt great then because the TV had remote controller which was not prevalent then. Most of the people that saw it were amazed and it was difficult to procure in Nigeria. Now, the world is not just talking of CRT, Plasma or LCD TV but High Definition Touch Screen TFT LCD TV. The world has evolved far beyond these times from VCR to VCD to DVD to Blue Ray and now to HDD players.
